If you're hesitant about using dark paint colours in your home, you’re not alone and many of my clients worry that darker shades will make rooms feel gloomier, we have enough gloomy days in England! But, as I discovered with COAT Paint’s Darlington in my own living room, dark colours add depth, interest and warmth.

Here’s my guide on how to use dark colours to elevate your space without making it feel confined.

1. Choosing the Right Shade

Dark paint doesn’t have to mean black or navy—there are so many rich, inviting hues that add warmth without feeling too heavy. I went with deep green-grey, a nuanced shade that doesn’t overwhelm the space but still makes a statement.

Pro Tip: Use COAT’s Digital Colour Chart to find the right shade. And remember, when it comes to dark colours, a matte finish can add a soft elegance without reflecting too much light.

2. Add Depth to Your Spaces

Dark colours create an illusion of depth, adding richness and cosiness. Contrary to popular belief, a rich shade doesn’t make a room feel smaller; it can enhance the room’s dimensions by drawing the eye outward. The darker shade has added a layered feel that makes my living room look more expansive and interesting.

Pro Tip: Use dark shades to add depth in narrow spaces like hallways or nooks. A dark wall can lead the eye through the room, making it feel more spacious.

3. Balance with Light Decor and Furniture

If you’re worried about dark walls feeling too intense, balance them with lighter decor and furniture. In my living room, I paired the darker shade with light neutrals, patterned cushions and warm wooden accents to create contrast and keep the space feeling open and airy.

Pro Tip: Adding mirrors or metallic accents can reflect light and lift the dark background, adding brightness and balance.

4. Embrace Natural and Layered Lighting

Lighting is essential when using darker walls, as it keeps the space feeling warm and inviting. In my living room, I’ve layered natural light with various sources, including this statement lamp. The vibrant shade adds colour and texture, while the marble base brings elegance and warmth to the room, perfect for cosy evenings.

Pro Tip: Statement lamps with bold shades can add personality and brighten up a dark space, creating a balanced and inviting ambience.

5. Layer in Cosy Textures

Layering is key to balancing and softening dark spaces, making them feel inviting rather than overwhelming. I’ve added a mix of throws, patterned cushions, and woven accents that give the room warmth and interest against the darker walls.

Pro Tip: Don’t shy away from layering different textures. It keeps the space from feeling flat and brings in that extra dimension and comfort.
