Creating a Calm and Inviting Living Space in Nottingham

The Challenge
My client’s modern-build home lacked character and didn’t feel like the retreat she wanted. With a demanding job, she needed a space that felt peaceful and welcoming. It had to be neutral yet inviting, with a layout that worked for both relaxing and socialising. Understanding her lifestyle and what truly made a space feel like home for her was key to getting the design right.
The Solution
To bring warmth and personality to the space, we focused on key changes:Adding character – We introduced coving and wall panelling to soften the boxy feel.Reconfiguring the layout – Blocking off an unused dining room door allowed for a more balanced furniture arrangement.Improving lighting – We removed half of the spotlights, put the remaining ones on dimmers, and added wall lights and extra sockets for table and floor lamps to create soft, layered lighting.Enhancing comfort – Carpet was replaced with wood-effect LVT for warmth and durability, with a large washable rug to soften the space and make it practical for her dog.Updating fixtures – A standard radiator was swapped for a sleek vertical column radiator.

The Finishing Touches
Custom sofas were designed to be slightly shallower than standard to maximise space. They were upholstered in a stain-resistant linen-effect fabric, ensuring durability without compromising on style. A glass and brass coffee table keeps the room feeling open and airy. The result is a thoughtfully designed living space that feels calm, welcoming and perfectly suited to my client’s needs.

"Words cannot describe how grateful I am for what Jo has done for me. My home has truly become my sanctuary where I enjoy just marvelling in everything Jo has created for me. With the starting guide of a vague idea of what I wanted, Jo blew me away at her eye for detail and involved me in her creative decisions. I am immensely grateful for everything Jo has done and couldn’t recommend her enough!”
